CNC Metal Parts: Specify Grade and Finish

A request for a stainless steel, aluminum, copper or steel part is incomplete without the material grade and drawing requirements. Define the service and finish before comparing machining quotations. BOLTTE's drawing-based service reviews the actual part rather than selling the pictured examples as a standard set.

1. Start with a controlled drawing

Send a dimensioned drawing and a matching CAD model when available. Identify part number, revision, units and quantity. Mark the functional interfaces rather than relying on the overall shape in a screenshot.

Resolve conflicts between files before quotation. A supplier should not have to decide which revision controls a bore, thread or mating feature.

2. Name the material grade

Specify the required stainless steel, steel, iron, aluminum or copper grade and condition. If the grade is not known, describe the application and ask for a proposal instead of presenting a general material name as a complete specification.

Separate a sample's appearance from verified material identity. Surface color or magnet response alone should not be treated as a material certificate.

3. Explain functional requirements

Identify mating parts, corrosion or chemical exposure, temperature and any electrical or thermal requirement relevant to the design. State critical tolerances and inspection needs explicitly.

Avoid assigning the tightest possible tolerance to every dimension. Explain which features control function so feasibility, machining and inspection can be reviewed meaningfully.

4. Specify finish and treatment clearly

Describe required coating, surface finish, heat treatment or other post-machining operation. State whether critical dimensions are required before or after that operation.

Do not use a promotional image as a color, roughness or hardness specification. Request confirmation of the required process and any necessary documentation in the quotation.

5. Compare quotations on the same scope

Check material grade, revision, quantity, finish, inspection, packaging and delivery scope together. A lower headline price may reflect an omitted process or an unresolved specification rather than equivalent work.

The BOLTTE service accepts drawing review for one-piece and small-batch requests. Final feasibility, price and schedule remain specific to the approved requirements.

6. Approve the manufacturing baseline

Confirm the final drawing, material, finish, quantity and inspection acceptance before production. Keep changes traceable and ask for written review if a tolerance or treatment changes after quotation.

For repeat orders, reference the approved revision rather than an old email subject or image. Representative catalogue pictures do not define the geometry of the delivered custom part.
