Magnetic Stir Bar Spinout: A Test Checklist

Oct 12, 2026 BOLTTE

A stir bar that stops following the magnetic drive may rattle, move irregularly or cease effective mixing. Increasing speed is not necessarily the solution. Use a controlled comparison of the vessel, bar, medium and startup conditions before concluding that the stirrer or bar is defective.

1. Record the complete setup

Note stirrer model, vessel material and bottom shape, liquid volume, approximate viscosity, bar model and dimensions. Include temperature and any change in the mixture during the run.

A result with water in a thin-bottom beaker is not proof that the same bar will remain coupled in a different vessel or a thicker mixture.

2. Inspect positioning and clearance

Place the vessel according to the stirrer instructions and check that its bottom is compatible with the selected bar. Ensure the bar can rotate without striking walls, probes or internal features.

IKA's guidance notes the importance of separation and medium conditions for magnetic coupling. Do not borrow a distance or viscosity limit from an IKA instrument as a rating for another stirrer.

3. Review startup rather than only final speed

Follow the instrument's permitted startup procedure. Observe whether instability occurs during acceleration or only after the medium changes. A gradual, approved ramp can be a useful comparison, but it is not a universal prescription for every experiment.

Do not retrieve or reposition a bar in a hazardous or hot mixture while the drive is operating. Follow the laboratory's handling procedure.

4. Compare one variable at a time

Within an approved safe test, compare a different compatible bar size or shape while keeping vessel, volume and medium conditions constant. Then investigate other variables separately if needed.

The BOLTTE shaped-bar listing includes several geometries, but does not provide validated speed recommendations for every shape. Record the actual outcome instead of assuming a cross or spherical bar is inherently more stable.

5. Inspect the bar and instrument

Check for damaged coating, visible deformation or a change from previous performance. Use the instrument's service guidance if the drive appears abnormal. Do not assign the cause to magnet damage without evidence.

If the process requires a different mixing method, seek an equipment-level review rather than repeatedly increasing speed. Stirring stability and adequate mixing are separate acceptance questions.

6. Keep a reproducible test record

Log bar dimensions, vessel, medium, temperature, startup setting and the observed point of instability. Include the accepted operating condition and a defined mixing endpoint appropriate to the process.

For an inquiry, send the setup information and selected catalogue model. A request for a stronger stir bar without vessel and medium details leaves the important comparison conditions unspecified.
