Custom Gear RFQs: Tooth and Mating-Part Data

A gear quotation needs more than outside diameter and tooth count. Supply the tooth system, mounting features and mating-part information so the geometry can be reviewed. Spur, helical and worm arrangements have different requirements, and a replacement gear must be compatible with the existing assembly.

1. Identify the gear arrangement

State whether the request concerns a spur gear, helical gear, worm wheel or worm shaft. Provide assembly photographs and the intended mating part. Identify which dimensions are measured and which are taken from an approved drawing.

A worn sample can assist review, but damage and wear may obscure the original tooth geometry. Do not describe a reverse-engineered measurement as confirmed design data.

2. Specify the tooth system

Provide module or diametral pitch, tooth count and pressure angle where known. For helical geometry, include the relevant helix information and hand. For a worm arrangement, provide the corresponding worm and wheel data.

KHK's technical reference illustrates that dimensional relationships depend on gear type and design inputs. Do not infer the whole tooth specification from a single outside-diameter measurement.

3. Define mounting features

Include bore and tolerance, hub dimensions, keyway or spline, fastening holes, thread details and face width. State the shaft and retaining arrangement so the mounting design can be checked.

Do not merge tooth and mounting requirements into a general statement such as same as the sample. The quotation should identify any feature that remains unresolved.

4. Include the mating conditions

Provide center distance, mating gear identification, required backlash or acceptance criteria, and any assembly constraint supplied by the machine designer. Explain load, speed, direction changes and the operating environment.

A single replacement can fit its shaft yet fail to mesh correctly. Request review of the pair or assembly when the existing tooth specification is uncertain.

5. Confirm material and finishing

Specify material grade, required treatment, finish and inspection documentation. The linked custom service reviews metal and engineering-plastic gear requests; suitability is confirmed for the actual design.

Do not infer heat treatment, hardness, gear accuracy class or service life from the promotional image. These must be written requirements and accepted scope where needed.

6. Approve a complete gear specification

Resolve the drawing revision, tooth data, mounting dimensions, quantity and inspection criteria before production. Keep the approved specification with the mating-part record for future replacements.

When only a sample is available, request a documented review that distinguishes confirmed geometry from assumptions. Price and schedule follow the reviewed design rather than the appearance of a catalogue example.
