Seal Materials: EPDM, NBR and Process Conditions

Oct 12, 2026 BOLTTE
EPDM sampling-valve seal catalogue reference

A seal material name is only the beginning of a compatibility review. The compound, fluid, cleaning process and mechanical fit all influence suitability. Compare EPDM, NBR and other available materials against the actual service conditions instead of selecting rubber solely by color or a broad application label.

1. Describe every medium the seal encounters

List process fluids, concentrations, contaminants and cleaning agents. Include temperature, pressure, exposure time and whether contact is continuous or intermittent. Cleaning can introduce a different chemical and thermal duty from normal production.

If the medium is a mixture, provide its actual composition where known. A compatibility chart for one pure chemical does not settle the complete application.

2. Request the exact compound

EPDM and NBR identify elastomer families, not one universal formulation or operating limit. Ask for compound identification and the supplier's confirmation for the stated conditions.

Parker's handbook discusses material selection and condition-dependent behavior. Do not copy another manufacturer's compound rating onto a BOLTTE seal simply because both are labeled EPDM or NBR.

3. Verify the full seal profile

Record critical diameters, length, flange dimensions and locating or sealing features. A molded sampling-valve seal cannot be identified reliably from one nominal dimension alone.

The linked EPDM selection has a specific profile and supplied dimensions. Compare its drawing and photographs with the existing valve; the material label does not establish fit or interchangeability.

4. Separate hygienic use from certification

Terms such as sanitary or aseptic describe an intended context but are not proof of a particular compliance standard. Request the required material declaration, traceability or test documentation explicitly if the process needs it.

Confirm which document applies to the exact supplied compound and batch. Do not infer food, pharmaceutical or sterilization acceptance from the product image.

5. Investigate the old seal condition

Record swelling, hardening, cracking, deformation or leakage observed after service. Note operating and cleaning history, not just the replacement date. A damaged sample may no longer represent the original geometry accurately.

Inspect mating surfaces and follow the equipment procedure for installation. Replacing the material will not correct a damaged seat, incorrect compression or an incompatible profile.

6. Build a condition-specific inquiry

Send the seal drawing, valve identification, required quantity, medium list and full operating and cleaning conditions. State any certification or traceability requirement before quotation.

Where compatibility remains uncertain, seek supplier review and an appropriate application test under the process owner's procedure. Record the accepted compound and conditions so future purchases reproduce the approved specification.

These manufacturer references explain general engineering principles. Their product ratings, test results and installation values do not apply automatically to BOLTTE selections.
