One-Piece Prototypes and Small-Batch CNC Orders

A one-piece prototype can answer a useful design question when its purpose and acceptance criteria are clear. BOLTTE accepts one-piece and small-batch requests for drawing review through its CNC service. Manufacturing feasibility, final price and timing remain subject to the confirmed part specification.

1. Define what the prototype must prove

State whether the first part checks assembly fit, dimensions, appearance or another requirement. Identify features that must reproduce the intended production design and any approved simplifications.

A dimensional prototype is not automatically evidence of long-term durability or production-process capability. Keep the test objective specific and distinguish it from later qualification work.

2. Freeze the first revision

Provide part number, drawing revision, units, CAD model and required quantity. Confirm that drawing and model agree before requesting production. Mark critical interfaces and any thread or feature that is not clear in the model.

If several alternatives are being evaluated, label them separately rather than submitting ambiguous overlapping files.

3. Review small-quantity scope

Identify material grade, finishing, inspection and delivery requirements even for one part. A low quantity does not eliminate setup, procurement or measurement work; request a quotation for the complete scope.

Do not assume every material or process has the same minimum, price or lead time. One-piece acceptance means a request can be reviewed, not that any drawing can be manufactured at a fixed price.

4. Agree inspection before manufacture

Define which features need measurement and what record should be supplied. State relevant tolerance and measurement conditions. Ask for a first-part review where appropriate, without calling an informal check a certified inspection process.

For mating trials, retain the counterpart dimensions and test method. A part that assembles once by hand may not meet the required repeatable fit.

5. Turn feedback into a controlled change

Compare results with the original objective and document observations. Revise the drawing explicitly when changing a bore, material or finish, then obtain review of any price or schedule effect.

Do not communicate a manufacturing change only through an unlabeled photograph or an old message thread. Keep the accepted revision with the order record.

6. Plan the repeat batch separately

For a follow-on order, reference the approved revision, quantity, material, finish and acceptance requirements. State whether the prototype's specification is unchanged or whether the trial identified new requirements.

Keep packaging, identification and delivery scope clear for multiple pieces. A successful first sample is useful evidence, but does not automatically approve an undocumented change in later production.
